My Toxic View On Spirituality/Personal Development
This week, I made a mistake and I came down on myself like a tone of bricks. “Joe, you’ve been doing this for 3 years now, you should know better” I annoyingly utter to myself in various variations all pointing to the same conclusion; I should be above this. Above mistakes because this work has somehow warranted me immunity from slipping up or doing something wrong from time to time.
That mentality is so wrong. In fact, it’s toxic. I had to remind myself of this today hence why I am writing this to remind you, the reader, also.
Believing you are on this journey to somehow reach a higher enlightenment where you no longer fall is a dangerous belief to have. I am coming to terms with my own compliance to this mentality.
We Are All Human
I am human, so are you. Part of the human condition is making mistakes; it’s inadvertently hurting someone, or letting someone down, or doing something you’re not proud of from time to time. It’s what we signed up for on this crazy journey that is life. Sure, we can aspire to better ourselves so to not be prone to making these mistakes but to believe we can be completely devoid of them? I have found this belief to cause me more harm than good.
